Home Plumbing Maintenance 101

Published by Webmaster

Was your home built before 1970? If so, your pipes may be made of galvanized iron. These pipes are likely to rust and corrode, which causes a drop in water pressure and a buildup of brown tint in the water. You can replace them by calling a plumber. For more plumbing maintenance tips, read this article.

Watch for Leaks

Leaks are not only expensive and wasteful of resources, but they are able to cause serious damage to your home and plumbing appliances. Water damage can subsequently bring about mold growth, which can be harmful to health and even the structural safety of your home. Treat even small leaks as big problems; if you notice a leaking faucet, damp carpet, wet cabinets, dripping refrigerators, or leaky toilet, call a residential plumbing company right away.

Repair Problems as Soon as Possible

Small plumbing problems are likely to become big problems if they are not resolved quickly. Plumbing issues tend to wear out plumbing fixtures, cause water damage, and encourage the growth of mold and mildew. Ironically, small puddles are usually more concerning than larger ones, as this can indicate that water is soaking into the floor.

Address Overflows Immediately

If water starts to gush from any plumbing appliance, one option you have is to locate the main shut-off valve to the water supply. You may need to use tools to shut it off—such as a wrench and a flashlight—so it’s important to have those tools ready in the event of a plumbing emergency.

Know Your Plumbing

Running to the main shut-off valve is not necessary if just one appliance is leaking and you can shut it off right away. That’s why you should find out how to shut off the water to your sinks, toilets, dishwasher, washing machine, and other plumbing appliances. It’s also useful to know the material used in your pipes.
