Purpose of a Sump Pump and How It Works

A sump pump is crucial in preventing basement flooding and maintaining a dry and secure basement or crawl space. Its primary purpose is to prevent flooding by removing excess water accumulating in a designated sump pit.

This pit is typically located at the lowest point in your basement or crawl space, allowing water to flow into it naturally. When the water level reaches a certain point, the sump pump activates and pumps the water away from your home’s foundation, preventing potential water damage.

The mechanism behind a sump pump’s operation is fairly straightforward. As water enters the sump pit, a float switch or pressure sensor detects the rising water level and activates the pump. The pump propels the water through a discharge pipe, directing it away from your property. To ensure optimal performance, a properly maintained sump pump can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years.

    Types of Sump Pumps

Sump pumps come in various types, each designed to cater to specific needs. The two main types are submersible sump pumps and pedestal sump pumps.

Submersible sump pumps are placed directly inside the sump pit and are submerged in water. They are more discreet and quieter than pedestal pumps, making them an excellent choice for finished basements.

On the other hand, pedestal sump pumps are positioned above the pit, with the motor on a pedestal. These pumps are easier to access for maintenance but are more noticeable and may produce more noise.

Common Causes of Sump Pump Problems

Sump pumps are reliable systems, but like any mechanical device, they can encounter issues.

The most common causes of sump pump problems include:

    • Power outages
    • Switch problems
    • Clogged intake or discharge pipes
    • Improper installation,
    • Regular wear and tear

It’s essential to watch for warning signs such as unusual noises, frequent cycling, or water accumulation in the basement. Timely detection can prevent potential disasters and costly repairs.

    Sump Pump Maintenance

Regular maintenance is key to ensuring your sump pump’s efficiency and longevity. We recommend having your sump pump inspected at least once a year by a professional plumber.

This inspection should include checking the pump’s components, cleaning the intake screen, testing the pump’s operation, and ensuring the discharge pipe is clear. Having your sump pump serviced before heavy rains of the rainy season or when you anticipate heavy water flow is also a good idea.

I just wanted to give you positive feedback on one of your employees who provided after-hours service at our home in Dixon. Jake was our technician. He was incredibly competent and professional, fixing the problem in very short order and with high quality craftsmanship. Additionally, he has some of the best customer relations skills of anyone I have met. He is friendly and very courteous. As I’m sure you know already, he is an incredible asset to your company and I wanted to give you confirmation from the customer’s perspective.

    ~ Jeff M. Dixon, August 30

Our toilet backed up and flooded the back of the house about a month after fly by night plumbing guaranteed all was well. It was well after hours and a nice thunderstorm was drenching the property. Rapid rooter was the only only company that would send someone out that night. We were lucky enough to have Charles 95 sent out to us. From the moment he arrived he made sure we understood that wherever the problem was he would fix it. He was correct. He was courteous and considerate throughout his entire visit. It took over and hour to find and fix the problem and at nine o’clock at night those are admirable traits. If we ever have any plumbing issues again we are going to give Charles a call.
